Our lifestyles – including long periods of sitting in chairs and possibly working at a computer - contribute to tightness and weakness in the hips and shoulders areas.
Myriad yoga asanas involve the complex hip and shoulder joints. It is common for people attending yoga classes to have tight and/or weak muscles around these joints. Plus, these joints are prone to various conditions such as arthritis, bursitis and in the shoulder area, rotator cuff problems.
When well executed asanas support the joints, albeit on the other hand if done inappropriately they may contribute to joint and tendon problems eg down dog.
Prevention of joint problems is ideal, however if problems do occur or exist then knowing how best to support the joints is crucial.
Healthy joints require:
- strong muscles to support the joints and to take load off tendons
- suitable mobility – too little or too much flexibility may cause problems
- appropriate alignment
- good micro-circulation
Topics covered in this practical workshop include:
- Basic anatomy:
- focusing on the main muscles involved in the movement of the hip and shoulder joints
- learning which muscles need to be engaged to be strengthened and the ones that need to lengthened in specific asanas. Some asanas require strong buttocks eg salabhasana whilst others need the buttock muscles to lengthen eg forward bends
- Asanas to lengthen tight muscles
- Asanas to strengthen the muscles supporting joints
- Movements to encourage adequate range of movement in the joints
- Appropriate alignment to support joints
- Common hip and shoulder problems eg bursitis, arthritis, shoulder rotator cuff problems
Karen Nicoll has been teaching yoga for 35 years and is one of the anatomy and physiology teachers on the IYTA Diploma of Yoga Teaching course. Over the years she has taught workshops in NSW and other states. One of her interests is how we can best support the body in yoga asanas and how to keep the body strong and mobile.
